Volunteers from Action 4 chalvey in Chalvey, Slough are joining the country’s biggest ever litter pick in a bid to rid our town of rubbish.
They are tired of the tide of litter that is bringing down the reputation the area and have joined the Big Tidy Up campaign, run by Keep Britain Tidy, in an effort to rid the streets of Chalvey of litter for good.
To prove how much they loathe litter, staff at Action 4 chalvey are going out onto the streets on 13th Febuary 2010 to clear the area of rubbish.
Mohammed Ahmed Chair for Action 4 chalvey said: “Staff at Action 4 chalvey take great pride in working in Chalvey but they’re fed up with the amount of litter on the streets. This clean up will show others that we care about the future of our local environment and that we are not prepared to live, work and play in an area that is blighted by rubbish.”
He added: “Taking part in the Big Tidy Up and helping to improve the state of the area is a great opportunity for us to get out into the community and show others that we care about the area.”
Figures released by the UK's biggest anti-litter campaign, Keep Britain Tidy, have revealed:
· Council taxpayers in the UK fork out £500m a year to clean the streets.
· Over 30m tonnes of litter are collected from our streets each year
· The UK rat population now stands at approximately 60 million thanks to the growing presence of dropped food.
· People can be fined £80 for dropping litter. Last year 44,000 people were prosecuted .
Like everywhere else in the UK, Chalvey has its fair share of litter problems. But thanks to the Action 4 chalvey they at least have people prepared to do something about it.
Action 4 Chalvey will begin to tackle rubbish at Kind Edward St on Saturday 13th Febuary at 10am. They are hoping that the rest of the community gets the message that dropping litter is 'simply not on'
