Dear Resident,
Action4Chalvey has recently been formed by a small group of residents living in Ledgers Road, Hillside and King Edward Street, determined to improve the standard of living in our area, with the goal of making Chalvey a more pleasant place to live. We are motivated to form an action group as many of us are sick and tired of the ongoing anti social behaviour, the run down nature of the neighbourhood and inadequate infrastructure caused through lack of investment over a number of years.
Many of us are fully aware that Chalvey suffers more social deprivation and poverty than many other parts of Slough. But that does not mean that we cannot find practical solutions to deal with some of the problems that are making our lives difficult. Nor does it mean that we lack confidence or determination to put pressure on those in authority that can do something about it!
Some of us have already been involved in local campaigns and action to rid the area of street prostitutes, and to limit the number of Off Licenses. Clearly these are not the only problems that exist in Chalvey, and we are a long way from getting many problems resolved. Bad housing, poor planning, social exclusion, lack of facilities, crime, congestion and rubbish on our streets all contribute to the negative feelings people have about Chalvey.
But it does not have to be like this! In order to influence those in power to improve our area, we need to be organised, proactive and have a more strategic approach than we have had in the past. We believe that the best way to do this is to set up a network of local residents and those already involved in groups/forums, that can be brought together under an umbrella organisation such as Action4Chalvey to exchange ideas and actively campaign to get things improved. That could involve drawing up a list of demands to put to the Council, lobbying the MP and Councillors, organising street petitions, convening meetings and organising demonstrations. If we sit back and do nothing, nothing will change, if we do something at least we have a chance of improving our community.
