HEAVY traffic has led to two areas of Slough to exceed acceptable nitrogen dioxide levels.

Slough Borough Council’s cabinet deemed the two areas to be air quality management areas (AQMAs) at its meeting on Monday night (Jan 24) and will now investigate ways of improving the air quality in the areas.

The two stretches of road are the A4 Bath Road from the junction with Ledgers Road/Stoke Poges Lane, east along Wellington Street to the junction with Sussex Place and A355 Tuns Lane from Junction 6 of the M4 north past the junction with the A4 Bath Road just onto the Farnham Road.

Speaking at the council meeting on Monday night Cllr James Swindlehurst, commissioner for neighbourhoods and renewal, said: “BY making these AQMAs it is a sign that we are going to do something about it.”

Plans to improve the situation will be included in the next version of the Local Transport Plan due later this year.

These declarations are in addition to the M4 area and Brands Hill AQMAs which were declared in 2005.
